Commission Pet Portraits from Lori Garfield

The Process

Commission pet portraits : Sampson, pet portrait of a black and white pet cat. Original Oil Painting by artist Lori Garfield, Medford Oregon

First of all, to commission pet portraits you’ll need to provide me with photos that capture your pet’s personality and character. Photos are hugely important, so you must choose your photos wisely. I prefer to take my own photos; however, if we aren’t in close proximity to each other we’ll work with your materials. If we do use your photos, then a discussion is preferred. My expertise lies in reproducing and interpreting the photo and establishing the character and personality of individual animals, hence clear photos of the animal’s face and eyes are critical. Outdoor photos are best as flash flattens features and hides details.

After your first inquiry, we will discuss your preferences of size and style. A pictorial background, based on your photo or suggestions, can personalize and enhance your pet portrait. If you prefer, simple background hues can be chosen to compliment your room decor.

Once I receive the photos, we’ll talk through my thoughts and your expectations. At this point, a 50% deposit is due and will reserve your place in my work schedule list. Typically it takes 5–8 weeks to complete the painting, depending on what else I’m working on.

Once I begin painting, I will send you one or two progress images to ensure it appears as you expect. This allows me to make sure everything is visually correct before I proceed further. When the piece is complete I will email your pet portrait image for your approval. You can request any reasonable, small amendments or alterations at this stage. Then, upon receipt of your emailed approval, the balance plus shipping charges will be due.

I return all photos along with the finished portrait. If you send photos for approval and I am unable to work with them, they will always be returned free of charge. If you are sending treasured photos by mail, please take copies in case of damage or loss in transit.

I guarantee my work, so should you decide not to proceed with the purchase, I will refund your initial deposit. Please understand that I will retain the painting and all rights, including full reproduction copyright, on all of my art.

Size, Materials and Pricing Details

Commission pet portraits : Echo, portrait of a pet dog in graphite. Original Drawing by artist Lori Garfield, Medford Oregon

I draw and paint all portraits by hand, using artist quality oils on canvas stretched on 3/4″ bars.

Prices are for one pet, head and shoulders with an uncomplicated background. I’ve listed popular sizes below.

Additional canvas sizes and depths are available. A full body portrait or an additional animal generally adds $100 to the price, and a more complex or specific background can add $150. Pricing adjustments may vary based on portrait size and complexity.

Please note that since I have found that most clients prefer to select a frame that suits their taste and décor themselves, I ship portraits without a frame.

A half deposit is due at the time I accept your commission. The final balance is due before delivery of the artwork, and shipping charges are extra. I retain full reproduction copyright on all of my art.
